Gravity South began when two friends found themselves mysteriously drawn to the tip of Africa as if by some hidden force.

After setting up the studios Travis & Wayne started performing their unique flavour of progressive psychedelic electro music at clubs and festivals in and around Cape Town quickly establishing themselves in the scene. As their sound developed so did the performance approach which evolved to include a live audio & visual show custom designed to enhance the party experience.
Their music is a fusing of sounds from the progressive, electro and psychedelic styles, designed for the dance floors. Tough driving kick drums interlaced with crisp percussion and punchy bass lines make up the basis of this sound. The visual show is a live mix-up of content filmed by Gravity South, Audio-Aware animations and sampled footage. The Audio & Visual performance is presented in a live spontaneous way that is adaptive to the vibe of an event.
Gravity South have performed at outdoor parties and festivals around South Africa for organisers such as Vortex, Nano Records, Earthdance, Insanity, Rustlers and more. With a focus on continual development of the live A/V act there is constant stream of tracks flowing out both studios.

Seems for me, its difficult to get away from computers. During the day I’m a Senior Software Engineer, designing software systems for the telecomms industry, and by night I’m a music producer.

I’m classically trained on guitar, doing my Unisa Music Exams during high school. I got into electric guitar, and eventually sold that out and become a DJ. I naturally progressed to producer in 2003, and started taking it seriously when I moved down to Cape Town.
Having friends like the boys from Nano Records: Nate (Protoculture), Adam (Headroom), Regan (Commercial Hippies)… You kinda pressured into making good quality music.
I originally cut my teeth on Reason, then tried out Buzz, then eventually moved across to Cubase as my DAW of choice for producing. I eventually moved to Ableton in the studio (I was already using Ableton for our live sets), which really changed my style of producing.

I too began my journey deepĀ in the computer world. After 10 years of Corporate activities I took the decision to dive full time into music creation. I studied sound engineering at Cape Audio College and picked up all the theory and practical experience I needed to develop as a music producer. Now that the music side of things made a little more sense to me I began to experiment with live visuals in order to add a visual element to our Gravity South live sets. When you begin to produce visual material specifically to go along with your musical creations then you are entering the world of music videos, live cinema and improvisation . This exciting area of audio visual fusion has led me into the world of stage design, video mapping, audio reactive visual programming and dmx lighting control for integration into the visual setup.
Isn’t it exciting how our evolution is so obviously linked to the technology we are constantly creating and improving upon? I feel very excited and privileged to be living in these exciting times.
